Who Should Attend

This course is recommended for:

  • counseling staff, peers, supervisors and licensed medical providers working in an approved Integrated Cooccurring Disorder treatment programs;

  • mental health counselors (MHC/LPC), marriage and family therapists (MFT/LMFT), art therapists (AT/LAT), social workers (SW/LSW/LCSW), psychologists, and other mental health providers;

  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADCs);

  • Qualified Mental Health Associates (QMHAs); and

  • Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHPs).

What Is Included

This on-demand, online training reviews population relevant adaptations for treatment of co-occurring disorders for people affected by intellectual and developmental disabilities, including recommendations for treatment approaches and collaboration with caregivers.

  • The course includes presentations and readings. You are free to take as much time as you need to review these resources. Once you have reviewed and mastered the content, you will be required to pass short quizzes before you are eligible for verification that you have successfully completed the course.

  • We suggest you take your time, view content as many times as you like, and access suggested readings and resources when possible. It is not necessary to complete the course in a single sitting. You are free to open and close the course as many times as you like.

  • We ask you to have an open attitude as you go through this course. At times it may seem as if we are reviewing what you already know. However, paying close attention is likely to provide an opportunity to realize subtle differences and important nuances in co-occurring disorders treatment and supervision. Instructor Jessica Leitner

Jessica Leitner, MA is a behavior consultant and trainer with over 30 years of experience advocating for adults and families with developmental disabilities in the Portland, Oregon area. As the owner of Jessica Leitner Consulting, LLC, Jessica supports caregiving organizations in navigating regulatory requirements while maintaining quality care. She has served as an Oregon Intervention System Trainer and Steering Committee Member; has worked with Multnomah and Clackamas Counties and Edwards Center, Inc; and helped implement Crisis Intervention Team training for local law enforcement.

Senior Instructor Teresa McDowell

Teresa McDowell, EdD, LMFT is professor emerita at Lewis & Clark, where she served as department chair and co-founded the college’s Problem Gambling Services. With over 40 years of experience as a clinician, educator, administrator, and consultant, Teresa focuses on workforce development, equity-based clinical practice, integrated treatment for problem gambling, and clinical supervision. She is a social researcher, program evaluator, and consultant with Partners in Social Research and Senior Instructor for ACORN. Dr. McDowell has authored more than 50 scholarly publications and is lead author of Socioculturally Attuned Family Therapy: Applying Third Order Thinking to Theory and Practice.
