Description

Social connections are an important component of health. Although some aspects of health decline with age, our capacity to grow socioemotional health is maintained across the lifespan. In this presentation, we will discuss the important relationship between social connection and health and explore strategies to enhance social connection for older adults. By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to describe a cognitive-behavioral model of social connection, identify at least three evidence-informed strategies to enhance social connections for older adults, and explain how to create a “Connections Plan.”

Instructor Emily Bower

Emily Bower, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor in the clinical psychology doctoral pogram at Pacific University. Her research and clinical work focus on geriatric mental health, with an emphasis on social connection and well-being in later adulthood. Her research examines adjustment to social, cognitive, and physical changes associated with aging to inform behavioral interventions for older adults. Dr. Bower earned her PhD from the SDSU/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Veteran Mental Health and Suicide Prevention at the VA Center of Excellence for Suicide.
