Following our early discussion / webinar in November 2023 on military culture and high-risk factors for problematic gambling behavior among this population, Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Problem Gambling Services (PGS) has invited OHA’s Veteran & Military Behavioral Health Liaisons to join us to continue learning about this population and to share some of the projects and programs OHA has initiated related to Veterans and the military population within our behavioral health system. Additionally, OHA's Veteran & Military Behavioral Health Liaisons, Emily and Susan, will offer content which may inform how we think about delivering services to Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF).

Presenter

Instructor Susan Davis

Susan Davis is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor with over seven years of experience working with serious persistent mental illness, personality disorders, and co-occurring disorders. Susan is an Army Veteran, trained in intelligence collection, and spent six years working with forensic in-patient clients at the Oregon State Hospital, specializing in behavioral interventions, trauma and anxiety, and substance use treatment. She currently acts as a subject matter expert in substance use disorders and Veteran Behavioral Health as a Program Implementation Strategist with the Health Systems Division of the Oregon Health Authority. Susan partially attributes her years as a blackjack dealer for her interest in behavioral health and addictions, as well as pushing her into military service.

Instructor Emily Watson

Emily Watson, MPA is the Veteran and Military Behavioral Health Liaison at Oregon Health Authority (OHA), working closely with state and federal organizations, Tribes, and stakeholders to create partnerships designed to advance programs and policies focusing on behavioral health care for veterans and military connected communities in Oregon. She has experience working in public and nonprofit sectors, including two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer, where she focused on community and economic development programs in Ukraine. Emily has worked for the State of Oregon for over ten years, with roles at The Department of Administrative Services (DAS) and OHA. Emily holds an undergraduate degree in international affairs, a graduate degree in public administration, and has completed extensive coursework in emergency management and project management.
